Leading Beyond the Classroom: Riara University’s Student Leadership Retreat in Naivasha
Great leaders are not built in lecture halls alone. They are shaped by shared challenges, honest conversations and the trust that grows when a team solves a problem together. That belief sat at the heart of our recent student leadership retreat in Naivasha, which Lindberg Holidays & Safaris planned and delivered for student leaders from Riara University.
Over three days and two nights by the shores of Lake Naivasha at , the students stepped away from campus routines and into an experience designed to build confidence, communication and teamwork. Here is how the retreat came together, and why Naivasha remains one of Kenya’s best destinations for leadership training and team building.
Why Naivasha Is Ideal for Student Leadership Training
Just 90 kilometres from Nairobi City , Naivasha offers the perfect balance of accessibility and escape. Groups arrive within a short road trip with many views along the way such as viewpoint stops , yet the calm of the lake, the open skies and the abundant wildlife create an atmosphere that feels worlds away from the classroom.
For universities and schools planning educational tours in Kenya, Naivasha offers:
Spacious conference and break-out venues suited to workshops and group sessions
Open grounds for outdoor team building activities
Comfortable, secure accommodation for large student groups
Nature-based experiences, from boat rides on Lake Naivasha to cycling in Hell’s Gate National Park as well as swimming at Geothermal hot spa

Partnering with Riara University: Planning Built Around Their Goals
Every successful university retreat in Kenya starts with listening. Before a single booking was made, our team worked closely with Riara University’s staff to understand what they wanted their student leaders to take home.
Together, we agreed on clear objectives:
Strengthen leadership and decision-making skills
Build trust and collaboration among student leaders
Improve communication across different student bodies
Give students space to reflect on their roles and responsibilities
From there, Lindberg handled the full logistics: safe group transport from Nairobi, accommodation, meals, venue set-up, session scheduling and on-ground coordination. This freed Riara’s team to focus entirely on their students while we managed every detail behind the scenes.
Inside the 3-Day Leadership and Team Building Programme.
Day 1: Arrival, Ice-Breakers and Setting the Tone
The students travelled from Nairobi to Naivasha in comfortable group transport, arriving ready to begin. After check-in and lunch, the afternoon opened with ice-breaker activities that helped participants from different departments connect. The evening session introduced the retreat’s themes and set personal goals for the days ahead.

Day 2: Leadership Workshops and Team Challenges
The second day was the heart of the programme. Morning leadership workshops explored topics such as communication, accountability, conflict resolution and servant leadership. In the afternoon, the learning moved outdoors with team-building challenges that tested problem-solving, trust and collaboration under pressure.
These activities did more than entertain. Each one ended with a debrief, where students reflected on how their team performed and what the experience revealed about leadership in action.

Day 3: Reflection, Commitments and the Journey Home
The final morning brought everyone together to reflect on the retreat’s key lessons. Students shared personal takeaways and set practical commitments to carry back to campus. After a final group photo and lunch, the group travelled safely back to Nairobi, energised and better connected as a leadership team.
Key Outcomes for the Student Leaders
By the end of the retreat, Riara University student leaders had gained:
- Stronger communication and listening skills
- Greater confidence in leading teams and making decisions
- Deeper relationships across student leadership groups
- A shared vision for their roles on campus
- Practical tools for handling conflict and pressure
The retreat reinforced something we see on every institutional trip we plan: when students learn outside the classroom, the lessons stay with them longer.
